The name Sui Generis refers to a Latin expression which means “one of a kind”, or “unique”. It’s a perfect name for the items that we carry. The team at Sui Generis makes no apology in its approach – selectively curating, rather than just buy merchandise – it allows the stores to pick out special and unique items from the world’s best designers — all accessible to you, at a great price.
Sui Generis is certainly not new to the game. Miguel and Gabriel, the dynamic duo in charge at Sui Generis have been submerged in the retail world of sales and merchandising since the early 90s, and have spent their lives around fashion. It extends into a shared love of style, a passion which has made Sui Generis what it is today: a fashion & style hotspot.
So here’s the story: Miguel and Gabriel graduated as an Industrial Engineer and a Photographer respectively. After just a few months of knowing each other they started buying and selling garments in Mexico in 1994. Quickly they were a success, and began selling a line of clothing at a Boutique called Irala Moda for 4 years in Guadalajara. It was at this time that the foundations of Sui Generis began to form – crafting a unique, one of a kind style. The boutique became a renowned fashion choice for celebrities and friends Julia and Renata Franco, Rock Band Members Mana and Azul Violeta, and singers such as Alejandra Guzman and Eli Guerra.
It wasn’t long until Miguel and Gabriel moved to the US. Miguel started out at MaxMara, quickly jumping up through the company, and then being snapped up by Ralph Lauren in 2002 where he became their Senior Sales Professional in the downtown San Francisco store. After a good 7 years at Ralph Lauren is was time to turn his focus onto Sui Generis.
While Miguel was mastering the retail business, Gabriel focused on buying and selling vintage and second-hand men’s designer fashion in the U.S., becoming an expert in vintage garments. Both remained set on a life in fashion. Both journeys were instrumental in what Sui Generis is today.
In 2006, Sui Generis launched, and became a fixture in San Francisco fashion. Miguel and Gabriel launched their first location: Sui Generis Vintage located at 218 Church St. Within 2 years, the Church Street location needed expansion. Sui Generis Consignment was launched in February 2008 at 2265 Market Street which allowed Sui Generis to offer a wider selection, expand the shop floor, and provide the best in designer consignment and vintage collections. Moving and expanding didn’t stop there though.
Fast forward to February 2011, Miguel and Gabriel were at it once again – unveiling a new dedicated Sui Generis Ille (Men’s) Store at 2231 Market Street. The former store was remodeled and became Sui Generis Illa (Women’s) Store, devoted solely to womenswear.
The new Men’s store has an amazing 1600 square feet floor which doubled the stores ability to provide a unique place to find clothing, and accessories from great designers. The new store features a new formalwear selection. and a private consigners area for both stores.
Sui Generis Women’s Designer Consignment at 2265 Market was an inevitable progression, after listening to our clients, we responded to ensure a wider selection, and greater focus on womenswear.
Both stores, as well as our website provide quality designer pieces from current years, and current collections and are available now.
We love fashion, and we love to style. We know it’s important that Sui Generis is modern, and current while providing great vintage pieces. It’s for this reason we take great care in fostering strong relationships with high-end designers, fashion sales associates, clients, and consignors in downtown San Francisco’s fashionable Union Square shopping district. Through these relationships Sui Generis are able to continually acquire new and second-hand designer fashion and accessories that are in excellent condition.
We look forward to seeing you in the store, or answering any questions you might have.
